Activities Overview

Here you will find two activities and lesson plans for use with the Nursing History Digitization Project.  These activities focus on using primary sources as well as developing a knowledge of the history of nursing education in Nova Scotia.  Although the activities are set up for classroom use, individuals may find it interesting to try these activities on their own.

Primary sources provide students with an opportunity to develop higher thinking skills by extracting and interpreting information.  The Nursing History Digitization Project provides a number of photographs and documents from nursing schools in Nova Scotia, which give students an excellent opportunity to use primary sources, while also learning Web research skills.

Activity One: Nursing Education Quiz

In this activity students are given a set of questions about the history of Nursing Education in Nova Scotia.  The questions can be answered using the information provided throughout the Nursing History Digitization Project website.  Both a lesson plan and an answer sheet are provided for teachers.

Activity Two: Using Primary Sources to Interpret the Past

In this activity students will select one of the nursing schools highlighted in the Nursing History Digitization Project website.  Using the primary source materials provided from that school, students will produce a piece of writing which depicts a day in the life of a student nurse in Nova Scotia.  A lesson plan is provided for teachers.
